no sound no video on raspberry pi 4 since last firmware upgrade #1208

Upgraded from release 1.20190709 to 1.20190718 and no able of getting my sound working, now i just hear some white noise when the raspberry boots up or shouts down. And even not been able yet of play any videos through HDMI on any release. Any stable release soon?

1) Are you referring to sound through the headphone socket or over HDMI? 2) Is there an image on the HDMI monitor? 3) Are you saying you can't play a video? If so, what kind of video, and what tool are you using to play it? 4) Are you using the vc4-fkms-v3d driver (it's the default on for a new install on a Pi 4), or have you changed it?

Thanks for answering so quickly @pelwell ! Answering your questions:

  1. I've never been able of use any HDMI on any firmware with the pi4, just able to use the soundcard with 1.20190709 through the headphone jack.
  2. Nope and no signal from the pi on HDMI0 or HDMI1.
  3. Not able to see the commandline or even execute kodi or startx. Can't start any video output. I can see a gui and controll my pi visually just through VNC.
  4. Yes and uncommented it from /boot/config.txt with no results.

I've using all the raspberry pi versions and sizes and not able to do a normal HDMI use of my pi 4.

For example, I couldn't install Raspbian through noobs because I couldn't use the screen, had to burn a Rasbian Buster image on the SD.

  1. I don't understand why you have not reported the non-working HDMI before. Is your application normally "headless" (with no display)?

  2. In your answer to (1) you mention a "soundcard". Is this an external device (a HAT, or a USB dongle), or do you mean the onboard audio?

Just bought and received it a couple days ago. I would like to use it with kodi, so I need the display. No external soundcard, using the pi's snd_bcm.

Does the display work with one of your other Pis? Please grab the EDID, decode it and post the results:

$ tvservice -d edid.bin
$ edidparser edid.bin

Run on this on the Pi4 if you can, and one of your other Pis.

I assume you have tried both HDMI ports?

Are you sure the micro HDMI cable is a good one? Or are you using a full-sized cable with an adaptor?

Yes, it works perfectly and i've bought also a full-sized micro HDMI cable for the pi.

When the pi4 is connected to the screen appears on it "HDMI1 00p @ 00Hz".

Did you try both HDMI ports on the Pi4?

Also, it appears from the EDIDs that you used a different port on your monitor for the Pi4 (port 1) and Pi3 (port 2) - please try the Pi4 in port 1.

If you get no image out of either port on the Pi 4 and with either input on the monitor then it sounds like there is a fault on the Pi 4. You could try a sudo rpi-update to get the very latest firmware and kernel, but I don't expect it to make a difference.

careful assuming the cable is good, I had an adaptor I could get edid data from a monitor with but no picture (but it did work on a different display) trying an alternative adaptor fixed my issue....

@chriscamacho makes a good point. Is your cable one of ours? It isn't that you have to use an "official" cable, more that we know they are well made - you get some terrible cables - and we can rule out some possibilities.

I've bought a new cable and also a adaptor too. It's not a cable or adaptor problem. I've realized that I can't use the DRM VC4 V3D driver. If I disable it, I can get video output, but no way to make it work with the new driver.

There isn't a full VC4 driver for Pi4 yet, so don't use vc4-kms-v3d on a Pi4. Why isn't vc4-fkms-v3d suitable for your use cases?

Please post the raw edid.bin file (NOT the parsed output) if you believe there is an EDID parsing issue with your display and vc4-fkms-v3d.

Attach it as a file, not dumped via hexdump or similar. Otherwise I'll just be wasting time converting your dump back into a binary file.

From your video it looks like DRM is choosing a different mode from the firmware, and your monitor doesn't like it. I'll have to run the EDID to work out what is going on.

base64 is installed by default, works well for small files, and hexdumps annoy @popcornmix, so what's not to like?
