As discussed in #3 the infrared dataset of MODIS can be used to train a model based on the same classifications as used for the VIS model.
This notebook includes the setup for training an IR-model and also includes some promising preliminary results and comparisons:
the IR resnet seems to result in comparable classifications to the resnet trained in the visible
supplying GOES16 IR images result in similar classifications and illustrates that a model trained on the MODIS-IR images can be transferred to GOES16 IR images to e.g. track the lifecycle of the cloud patterns and make a point about the diurnal cycle, as the classifications can be done with a temporal resolution of 15 min.
due to full coverage of the domain, patterns that are not detected on the MODIS overpasses are classified on GOES16-IR images
