Well that's strange. On a whim I tried editing the on open - turn on light and was given an on close option. Setting up that automation to be on close-turn off light allowed me to then set up the on-open automation.
Unclear to me why doing it the other way round runs into problems.
Not sure if this is a software issue or a wiring issue but I am not seeing a close event trigger when I try and add an automation. I can set the door opener light to come on when the door is opened but I am unable to automate it turning off when the door is closed.
I do receive notifications from the Home app when the door is closed however.
