Minor fixes for plot-gain-solutions. #479

plot-gain-solutions is currently broken. These changes should get it working again.

I am going to make an executive decision to merge this - it touches nothing outside of the plotter. We currently lack the git lfs capacity to run the tests. This will likely be an ongoing problem, but probably isn't worth fixing.
