Which build? KDE, Qt4, Qt5, Windows, Ubuntu, Mac?
Mac 

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Press media key

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Playback should react. It does not

Sorry - I no longer have direct access to a Mac. I did try to use the code from 
Clementine, but it did not work for me - and broke the unified toolbar.

So, if you want this implemented then someone else is going to have to provide 
a patch.
