album art doesn't display when browsing genres

Browse screen, Genres tab, selecting 'Albums' from any listed genre -- album covers are not displayed, only generic icon.

Yes that is correct. Album art appears when browsing albums but not when viewing albums under a genre.

I've not had any luck recreating. What is strange is that the same code is used for the Artist Album page as the Genre Album page. So I would expect the problem to appear for both views.

One thing you can try is to force an AlbumArt reload. On either of the pages press and hold an Album item and a pop up should appear with a "Reload Album Art" option. Select that to see if the Art gets loaded.

Interesting. I just tried "reload album art" for an album listed under a genre, and indeed the art loaded. But if I have to manually reload every album for every genre... well, I have over 3000 albums on my server. Could be painful.

There is an option on the Settings->Album Art page to see the missing ones and also do a retry on them. The Action button should have these options. The Missing action will bring up a dialog listing the missing ones.

Settings -> Album Art -> Missing listed about 400 albums. After a Retry it's down to 371 albums missing, due to no file for those.

Genre albums still don't display any art. Even the one which I reloaded earlier does not display now. (I exited and restarted MaximumMPD to see if that might help.) Maybe genre album lists are cached differently?

Its possible this is being caused by the tags (or lack of) in the files for the Album. Can you check to see if the Album Artist tag is set for one of the problem Albums ?

Many but not all of the tracks on my server have the 'Album Artist' tag with a correct value.

Here's another interesting thing, even though NONE of the albums listed for ANY selected genre display with album art... when I drill down to see the tracks for those albums, the album art is displayed properly for every track listed. So, the art is missing on the list of albums but not for the list of songs on the album.

I believe the root of the problem was a change made a couple of releases ago that changed to using the AlbumArtist tag instead of the Artist tag. I have reverted back to using Artist and that is in version 6.0 which is now in the App Store

Sorry the behavior is unchanged -- no album art is displayed when listing albums for a selected genre, however the album art appears properly when listing the tracks for any album selected in the list.

Screenshots attached for the genre 'Jazz' (but behavior is the same for all genres).

I don't think you quite understand Richard. EVERY album is "problematic" in that cover art does not display when displaying album list for a genre. This applies to ALL genres. If I select an album in the list in order to drill down to see the tracks on it, then the album art is displayed properly for the track listing.

Album art is displayed correctly when browsing artists or albums. The problem appears only when browsing genres.

I think it might help if I can get you to run the "list genre" command on your music db so I can hopefully see why the album art is not getting resolved.

There is a tool called "mmtc" that should do what I need. You should find a binary at https://github.com/figsoda/mmtc/releases/tag/v0.3.2 for you platform

The command to run is:

mmtc-x86_64-apple-darwin --address 192.168.50.149:6600 -C "list genre group album group albumartist group artist" >out.txt

replacing the binary name with the one you downloaded and the address value to one that points to your mpd instance. The out.txt file should give me what I need.

Your genre tags look fine so I'm still at a loss one what the problem is.

I did a release over the weekend to the App Store that includes a new option on the Settings->Debug page to save off debug information to a file. Its in the form of a new Action Button called "Save". Once run you can go to the iOS Files App and navigate to the MaximumMPD folder stored in the "On My iPhone" section. In that folder there should be a file called "mpddebug.json". You should be able to transfer that file somewhere (air drop etc) and send it to me.

I'm hoping that this gives me so more insight to the album art that has been downloaded.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for adding the debug log option; I have updated your app to the new version.

But because I just upgraded my phone from iPhone XR to iPhone 15 Pro, MaximumMPD has quite a large queue for downloading the album art (the art did not transfer during the iPhone upgrade process for some reason).

So I will wait for the album art to finish downloading before recreating the issue and sending the debug log.

To confirm a few things:

1) All albums for a selected genre do not show the Album Art 2) Those same albums when browsed via Artist->Albums or Albums direct do show the Album Art.

So for example if we take the John Coltraine/A Love Supreme Album it does not show on the Genres->Albums but does on the Artist->Albums views ?

Now that you have reloaded the art due to a new device the exact behavior still same?

1: correct, selecting 'Albums' for any genre displays a list of albums without any art

Correct; not only this behavior you state (Coltrane/A Love Supreme art displays for Artist->Albums plus browse Albums but not in list of Genre->Jazz albums)... but when I select A Love Supreme from the list of Jazz albums (with no art displayed) to drill down to the song listing, the app then displays a list of the tracks on that album and the cover art is displayed properly in the track listing!

Now that you have reloaded the art due to a new device the exact behavior still same?

Behavior is unchanged after upgrading my hardware.

I was finally able to recreate once I saw that you are connecting to an 0.21.x version of MPD. The fix for it is in Version 6.2 that should be now in the App Store.
