gnome-mplayer spins DVD's too quickly and loudly #543

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Watching DVD's with gnome-mplayer

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I'm expecting that gnome-mplayer uses low drive speeds so that the drive
doesn't hum loudly. I'm guessing it uses the maximum drive speed and the noise
that the drive produces is loud.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
The version is 1.0.2 and I'm using it on Lubuntu 11.04.

Please provide any additional information below.
Command "eject -x 1" on terminal works for a little while and after few seconds
drive speeds up to maximum.

This is an mplayer configuration issue, please add

dvd-speed=1

to you ~/.mplayer/config file and see if that helps.

from the mplayer man file

-dvd-speed <factor or speed in KB/s> (DVD only)
Try to limit DVD speed (default: 0, no change). DVD base speed
is about 1350KB/s, so a 8x drive can read at speeds up to
10800KB/s. Slower speeds make the drive more quiet, for watch‐
ing DVDs 2700KB/s should be quiet and fast enough. MPlayer re‐
sets the speed to the drive default value on close. Values less
              than 100 mean multiples of 1350KB/s, i.e. -dvd-speed 8 selects
              10800KB/s.
NOTE: You need write access to the DVD device to change the
              speed.
