KDE Neon needs one or both of these packages installed:
gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1/focal,now 12.10.1+20.04.20200408.1-0ubuntu1 amd64 [installed] gir1.2-ayatanaappindicator3-0.1/focal,now 0.5.4-2 amd64 [installed]
The tray icon worked when I just tried installing the AyatanaAppIndicator3 package alone.
Install these and you should be able to activate the tray icon on Neon at install time.
For now, KDE Neon still seems to be based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
