I'm happy to accept patches to be flexible about the 2401, but no longer having the misfortune of being a cvs user, I'm unlikely to do that myself.

First bit of work I'm doing in the password issue.
This is tested to be working (though not extensively), and builds without warnings (on my Devuan GNU/Liinux beowulf). Your review is appreciated...
