search results opening wsa #357

i don't know why but when i try to do a normal search, windows subsystem for android launches and i have to wait for the VM to start before being redirected to my search results, it works but it's a bit annoying to have to wait for it to initialize

Mine will do that too but actually do you run Windows Insider or a Google Play version of WSA?

i have WSA2311.40000.6.0 x64 - MindTheGapps - RemovedAmazon (with google play and without amazon)

This isn't the first time I've heard of this but I haven't been able to reproduce as of yet.

ok, mine also only has this bug if I have a Google Play install of WSA.

If you change your WSA Settings to "always on" instead of as needed or whatever in the Power section, does it ever happen?

I recently uninstalled and then re-installed I think the same WSA package you just did, and I have been set to always on -- it has not done it once.

I have a sneaking suspicion, @rcmaehl , that WSA checks which apps are installed prior to launching the msEdgeRedirect Chrome window when using search.

If the always-powered-on and Google Play are needed then we have a possible answer.

I will switch mine to As Needed and reboot a couple times and see if it starts appearing again.

ok, mine also only has this bug if I have a Google Play install of WSA.

Would explain things. I haven't messed with Google Play on WSA yet so that may explain why I haven't been able to reproduce

Potential Solution:

  1. Check which app it tries to open and then go to Android Settings (type wsa://com.android.settings into your browser's address bar)
  2. Go to "Apps"
  3. Click on "See all __ apps"
  4. Click on the app entry (the one that is being open from search redirects)
  5. Click on "Open By Default" and disable "Open Supported links"

Do let me know if this helps and fixes the issue, so I can update my repo's documentation, MustardChef

May I also suggest trying to change the default browser to any other browser then setting the desired browser as default? In normal Windows settings not in WSA. Had the same problem before and this is what fixed it, thankfully. What happened was that I installed a browser app in WSA and when opening a link, Windows asked whether to use WSA or old default (browser) but I skipped the dialog and it defaulted to WSA.

Steps to change defaults (Windows 11):

If you want Edge to be your default, then temporarily install any other browser and do the same steps where the new one is the "non-default" and Edge is your "desired default".
