I think streaming is impossible over lan more than 720p.

I have the same box and had the same problem. It is possible to watch large
videos with cca. 6MBytes/sec over LAN, but be sure that during you watch,
disable the Transmission client. The image freezes due to the heavy processor
load caused by too tcp many connections.

Definitely possible if by streaming you mean using samba protocol. Even when
running transmission! I have version 1.2 and the hard disk attached is ext3. Of
course using lan cable and not wifi!

Yes gchasapis. I mean watching the movies from the box using SMB.
I'll have to try it too as you say it's possible. I'll tell you guys how it
went :)

i agree with serhatdogan here, dont waste your time trying to figuring this
out. the lan transfer rate restricts the streaming quality, besides, the
machine cpu overloads. So might as well just remove the hdd and plug it onto
your computer, why bother?

Hi guys, I just want to share that recently I bought this router from ASUS
(http://www.asus.com/Networks/WiFi_Networking/RTN56U/#specifications) and, with
this little baby, my NAS NS-K330 SNAKE OS V1.3.2 (20101130) can stream, over
Wi-Fi, HD movies (.mkv) with more than 5GB size, perfectly.
I figured out that all the issues with SAMBA over Wi-Fi was due my old router
(WRT54G) was not able to deal with the traffic, but with this new router
everything changed, now I can download a torrent and then watch it from the NAS
over the Wi-Fi connection. I can copy files over Wi-Fi with almost the same
rate as than over lan cable.
regards.

I'm able to stream 1080p videos perfectly via DLNA (minidlna) and via Samba.
I tested with a video which total bitrate is around 15 Mbps (the highest
bitrate video I could find on the interwebs). That's roughly 2 MB/s to stream.
My NAS is able to deliver around 4 MB/s via LAN, so it's perfectly capable of
streaming high resolution videos; and with Transmission running simultaneously!

arionkra, by any chance do you use a PS3 as your DLNA player? I am able to
stream avi's through MiniDLNA but mkvs....nada :|

rsam, I use exclusively my LG 47LE7500 TV as player, and it works pretty well
for "mkv" files and other formats as well.
One thing to note is that my TV does not support "DTS" audio streams, so I have
to convert to "AC3" for every video. Beside that, my TV does not play movies
that have been muxed with "Header removal" compression (using "mkvmerge").
Maybe something like that is happening to you.
