8 years ago - A level ends when the player successfully reaches the jump gate; the player needs to destroy the boss that keeps the gate `locked' (so even if the player reaches the gate and passes through it while the boss is still alive, nothing will happen). The boss fight takes place over a static background (the scrolling stops when the boss and gate is reached) and with the jump gate in view, somewhere at the top of the screen.
- Once these requirements are met (ie: the boss is dead and the player ship goes through the gate), the game plays some jump gate animation/sound fx, image fades to black and then it goes to a cut scene.
- The cut scene must be capable of displaying images, text (subtitles) and sound (background music and narration). Bits of the story are revealed (story wise, as it's not directly connected to what the player has actually done). The cut scene is a series of slides, accompanied by text, music and narration. It plays at a preset speed, with the option to skip it altogether.
- After the cut scene plays, the award screen is shown. It contains any achievements that the player might have unlocked. It stays on until the player decides to continue (presses a certain key).
- A new cut scene comes up, detailing ship upgrades and communicating any relevant information regarding the mission. Same cut scene requirements as before apply (play images, text and sound).
- Before entering the new sector, the player must hit a key. The new sector fades in with the ship moving away from a up-blowing jump gate, on the other side.
Notes: To me the sequence cutscene-past-stuff / awards-screen / cutscene-future-stuff makes sense, but it might not be such a brilliant idea after all. Let's discuss this further.
