I wouldn't call them orphaned ... they all link back to BHL and there are plans for integrating the images (and a DOI -- ARK) in the BHL platform.
@udcmrk I guess by “orphaned” I meant they’ve been cut adrift from EOL. The concern seems to be that there’s a community that have invested a lot of effort in tagging these images and that effort is not being made much use of.
To this day I have no idea why anyone uses ARK, there’s no global resolution and no global metadata service, which makes them less than useful.
The images on Flickr I the Encyclopedia of Life images, e.g. https://www.flickr.com/photos/biodivlibrary/29019704990/in/album-72157673114127815/ seem orphaned now that EOL seems moribund. Lots of metadata tags were added to those images by users, for what seems to now be for little reason. Is there some way to make use of the that information? For example, can we upload the images to Zenodo where they can get DOIs and we can add some of the metadata?
