The latest releases of Java have caused two issues for users who are not using the native ROES Web Start installs. Java 8 Update 40 has issues giving Java applications focus on OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Java 8 Update 31 has issues properly checking SSL certificates. Neither of these issues affect customers running via ROES Web Start, our recommended method for all users.
Java 8 Update 40 Issues on Yosemite 10.10
Released last week, Update 40 is not giving proper focus to Java applications so keyboard interactions are not possible (i.e. text entry). Oracle has multiple bug reports entered for this but the next dev release of Java 8 does not have a fix yet. Deleting the current shortcut and installing via the launch.dmg is our recommendation to avoid future possible issues like this with Java updates.
Java 8 Update 31 SSL Bug
There is a bug in the latest versions of Java 8 and 7 in checking the revocation status of an SSL Certificate via TLS. Studios not installed via our ROES Web Start native installs and using these latest Java 8 and 7 versions can see an alert dialog regarding the site's security certificate not being trusted. However, clicking on More information simply states the issue is that Java is unable to determine if the certificate has been revoked. Oracle has acknowledged this as an issue with multiple bug reports open. Installing and running ROES via the native ROES Web Start is the best solution.
ROES WEB START REMINDER
ROES Web Start was created to keep issues arising with Java updates - be it bugs such as these, security blocks from Apple, constant alerts - at bay by utilizing our own engine installed on the system to run ROES in. ROES Web Start is available for all ROES launches from the default index page for new installs - a launch.msi installer file for all Windows platforms and a launch.dmg package install for current OS X versions (10.8 and higher).
