Thumbnails #59

What is the purpose of these thumbnails? screen shot 2014-01-31 at 11 37 58

michaelbragg commented 10 years ago

Clicking on this will switch to the corresponding video in the player to the right.

Caveat: If there is only one, then it can't switch between any.

Some ideas for highlighting the chosen thumbnail: Overlay: screen shot 2014-02-06 at 09 59 10 Glow: screen shot 2014-02-06 at 10 01 31

Do we need instructions to go with the thumbnail to explain what the user needs to do?

spencerrowbotham commented 10 years ago

Overlay looks more apparent, a line to say "click on the thumbnail to display" would probably suffice.

Still odd spacing in the blue 'back to adverts' box - are we going to equalise spacing and revert to chevron instead of arrow in a circle?

Will build the overlay and line of text into the site

I still have a nagging feeling that if we need to explain what to do with text we are failing.

The odd spacing should be resolved once issue #44 is resolved.

spencerrowbotham commented 10 years ago

Let's not do it then mate - you suggested the line!

Just playing devils advocate.

How do you encourage the user to click without using text?

Jon-Masters commented 10 years ago

I would have to look into it but should be possible, but maybe if there is only 1 video not to show the thumbnail on the right. If there is more than 1 maybe place a play icon over the top of each advert thumbnail using html (don't have to redo graphics this way ) and then with javascript autoplay the video when the relevant thumbnail is clicked.

spencerrowbotham commented 10 years ago

You brought it up mate, I suggested a possible solution, you casted doubt whether we needed to do it at all, I said don't do it then, now you are leading back to the original point?

Confused, Manchester

  • text links use a stand out colour
  • buttons use a stand out colour and shape
  • 3d to to bring to the front layer

@spencerrowbotham Welcome to the brain storming that goes on in my head.

Vimeo's take: screen shot 2014-02-06 at 11 37 08

The selected video display's the play button like Jon's suggestion. Hovering over the none playing video highlights it to show that it is clickable.

spencerrowbotham commented 10 years ago

Hooray. Good decision.

Relieved. Manchester.

Current status (using wrong sprite until merged with play button):

Thumbnail with new icon: screen shot 2014-02-06 at 19 54 59

The icon needs to be bigger. Possibly bolder. 48x48 is a good size as it's the recommend size for touch elements.

fateskimo commented 10 years ago

Apologies, when you said 48x48 I thought you were referring to the retina size. I'll try and sort the new sprite out tomorrow.

spencerrowbotham commented 10 years ago

Any chance it could be more prominent - can hardly see it?

My fault @fateskimo, me and Dan discussed, updating the button to use a solid blue background and white triangle, but didn't post it on here for you to see.

screen shot 2014-02-11 at 08 49 23

As the thin outline is getting lost on complex preview images.

Sorry!

fateskimo commented 10 years ago

No probs @michaelbragg, Dan mentioned something yesterday but we got side tracked as I've added a filter to make the thumbnails Black and White until you hover over. I've just created a new branch and added a pull request for the play button with a solid blue background. Combined with the filter this should make it difficult to miss. Cheers

michaelbragg commented 10 years ago

That new button is looking great. Thanks.

Pushed to DigitalDev.

@spencerrowbotham is the purpose of the thumbnails clearer now?

Will sort the back button icon out via issue #44.
