Expected Behaviour
Adobe Digital Editions does a nice job with this, and we can/should use it as a model
User should be able to create folders
Drag and drop to add ebooks to folders
Content can belong to many folders (like a playlist in iTunes)
Folders should be able to be nested / have a hieracrchy
Do not attempt to slurp metadata from EPUB files for categorization
a clear requirement for the pre-load scenario for Kenya Digischool project is to be able to copy a folder structure so that the first time the app is opened, the content is already in the proper folders.
Navigation should be easy - again, look at ADE - the "Bookshelves" are on the left margin of the app home screen. There is an easy way to get back to "All items"
We do not need to include "smart playlists" (last read, recently added) to the first version of this, though something to consider on the roadmap.
I would recommend using the name "Folder" instead of "Bookshelf" which Adobe Digital Editions uses.
"Nice to have" add a custom icon for a folder.
Use Case / User Story:
Mary is a Standard 2 (second grade) teacher in a Digischool primary school in Kenya. Her school has received 40 pupils' tablets, which are located in a computer lab. She has 60 students in her second grade class, and there are 450 students in the school, which has grades 1 - 8. Mary has been given a teacher's laptop with the same app and content as the pupils' tablets. The computer lab also has a projector that Mary can connect to her laptop.
Each day, Mary's class can use the pupils' tablets in the computer lab for a 50 minute period. Her Head Teacher (principal) has decided that the class will use the tablets for a different subject each day on a rotating basis. The tablets are also available from time to time for reading practice.
The Digischool tablets have been pre-loaded with 288 textbooks - 6 books for each subject for each of the 8 grades. The 6 core subjects in the Kenyan curriculum are English, Kiswahili, Math, Science, Social Students, Christian Religious Education "C.R.E." In addition, the tablet has been loaded with 300 Early Grade Readers (storybooks) which have been categorized into Grades 1 - 3, 100 books for each grade.
On Tuesday when Mary's class enters the computer lab, the students pair up to get a tablet. Some need to share. Today they will be using the tablets for Social Studies. She tells the students start with a specific book, on Chapter 5. Mary also navigates to the book on her laptop and projects it on the screen.
Therefore, students should be able to easy find the Class 2 content, then find Social Students. One in that folder, they can easily choose the correct book out of the 6 books in the folder, then use the Table of Contents to navigate to Chapter 5.
Similarly, for reading practice, students should be able to navigate to the Readers folder, choose their grade within that folder, and start reading.
