Help translate Read the Docs #4462

Open agjohnson opened 6 years ago

agjohnson commented 6 years ago

Read the Docs has a number of language translations that are either not fully translated or need translation reviewers to approve the translations in order for us to use them.

This is a great place to contribute if you want to contribute to Read the Docs but aren't familiar with our code or even programming in general.

We use Transifex for managing our translation workflow. If you have a user account on Transifex, you can help contribute translations or can become a translation reviewer to help approve translator contributions.

Our current translation state can be found here (note this does not include the amount of translations that have been approved, but currently this is 0% for most languages). https://www.transifex.com/readthedocs/readthedocs/

The languages that have translations but aren't currently reviewed are closest to being usable, but we can still use help translating languages that aren't translated or have little/no translators.

We also will be focusing on translating our documentation project soon: https://www.transifex.com/readthedocs/readthedocs-docs/languages/

There are less complete translation here however.

To get started, feel free to contribute translations or message myself or another language coordinator to help with translation reviews.

Should this be on the ReadTheDocs docs itself, so that we don't have a constant open issue?

Hello, I want to contribute with spanish, thanks

astrojuanlu commented 3 years ago

@agjohnson What is the current status of these translations? Do we still accept external contributors? I'm happy to document the process a bit more in our official docs, as @RichardLitt suggested.

This issue is still valid, though it's less of an issue and more of a pointer for folks to go to transifex. We used to get submissions of MO/PO files directly and would have to close them.

We need more eyes on transifex and our translation process in generally. I think I might be the only one who has done any work with our documentation or application translations at Transifex recently (it's not that recently actually), and it looks no one has run our application translation update commands for a couple years :disappointed:

agjohnson commented 3 years ago

Also, very unfortunately, Transifex is a completely different workflow, it's a completely different community to manage, and is difficult to work back into our release workflow. I'd like to see our translations updated at release if possible, but we haven't picked up a cadence there.

Hi I wanted to see if translations were still being reviewed on the transifex website
