WORK IN PROGRESS, NOT READY FOR MERGE: causes HalfDuplexIT.shouldFailHandshakeWithUnequalAuthorization to take 30 secs instead of LT 1 sec, and causes the FetchIT.shouldReject... tests in nukleus-kafka.java also to take 30secs.
