New ERC Events tab for Events #85

Closed AnaHotaling closed 6 years ago

We need a new tab for the Events listing. No little icon, just an ERC Events for Epic Races Consulting Events. Eva wants all races which we only manage to be listed here instead of listed as an Epic Race. It would go at the very bottom of the Event tabs. Thanks!

Interesting idea. Just curious, are runners really interested in that? Do you believe you have visitors coming to the site and saying to themselves "I want to run a race, but only if it was managed exclusively by ERC. Where can I find those races?"

It's mainly because Eva would like a differentiation between races that are Epic events versus races that Epic is paid a flat rate to manage but, due to the hiring organization's budget/choices/etc. don't live up to Epic standards. It also gives organizations looking to hire Epic a place to see examples of "Epic Races Consulting" events and the guidelines for them.

We've gotten a bit of feedback from disappointed participants surprised/upset/unhappy with events they found on our site that we only manage, so we are going to differentiate them. It's more subtle than big red letters at the top of each page going "Don't blame us! We were just hired to do the job!" ;)

Thanks for clarifying. I now understand the intent. I believe there may be better methods though for dealing with this problem. Adding a new navigational link doesn't effectively solve the issue you're dealing with. It gives end users a new category they don't understand and are not looking for. It doesn't make it clear that other events are not official ERC events.

I would suggest considering some alternative fixes. First of all, if this is a real problem, you'll likely first want to make efforts to improve those events or stop doing them. But secondly, you might also consider not listing them on your site at all, or maybe just putting them in a different place on the site that is lower profile with just links to separate sites for more info.

As for site modifications, if you do decide that continuing to list these events on your site with all the same detail, I recommend considering adding some kind of notice/icon/indicator in a few places that clearly designates certain events as "official". Maybe in the events list you could have a little badge on the events or your logo with some text like "Official Epic Event". Same on the individual race pages. We could add some section or badge or whatever in some place that gives users info about who takes credit (or blame) for this event.

All that to say, I really don't believe a new navigational item will help the user. It would be a non-standard addition to the menu. E-commerce sites typically separate those kinds of distinctions so you don't end up seeing a list of links like:

The last item is not like the other. It doesn't fit and users scanning the list won't expect it or even click on it usually.

I hope all this makes sense and is helpful.

I like the badge idea! Let me run it by Eva. 😊

She can call me if she wants. I encourage that actually.

AnaHotaling commented 8 years ago

She says she will call but not until after this weekend's race.
