So, there apparently is no . operator. Rather, works on floats. This seems a bit inconsistent; in any case the text seems inaccurate.

It is inconsistent, and it's no longer true in the latest version of the Base library (slimmed down successor to Core), which is now what the book is based on. You can see this in the updated guided tour chapter:
