useless group elements shouldn't be added in #988

Please don't add an unnecessary group when there's no functional need. If I 
draw a single path and then go to save it, don't wrap it in a group. It feels 
like bloat.

Hi. If you want the reason -- I believe the reason is each parent group 
represents a layer.
