Found this myself. I can't say for certain when it started happening but I'll go through the codebase and check it out in a bit. I may have just misaligned it all originally and never caught it since there weren't a lot of thumbnails on the homepage.
Confirmed it is also happening in latest firefox release.
That's possible... but it's more likely that I misaligned it when I rejigged all the margins and paddings.

Just confirmed the issue has been happening forever. Unfortunately I never caught it because all our thumbnails were dark in color and blended into the background of the posts nicely. Will commit a fix momentarily.
