Music stuttering on the Droid A855 #15

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. put a .flac file on the sdcard
2. start andless
3. select the file and play

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

The file plays, but there is a stutter if you do anything on the phone. I
use Rockbox on my Cowon D2+ and the flac file I'm using doesn't do that.
Unlocking the phone causes stuttering. It's just annoying more than
anything. It doesn't matter if it's plugged in or not.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
andless 1.2.1
DroidMod build 164 (1.0),

Please provide any additional information below.

Could this have anything with the priority set on the program itself? I
mean, I could understand the stuttering if it didn't have the resources.
But flac shouldn't take that much more processor power. I've converted this
flac to a 500kb ogg file, and it doesn't skip.

I just installed Meridian player as well, and played the same flac file with
it, and
I'm getting the same skipping. I don't know if they are using any of your
code, but
it's worth a look. I can't rate the app in the Market, as I realize that flac
is
still an on-going thing... but I would be much appreciative if you could check
this
out. I am willing to send debug data or help test if you'd like.

Same problem on a Vodafone 32b HTC Magic, original Donut 1.6. All ok if I stay
in
Andless (selecting tracks and cue´s) but starts stuttering if i do anything
with the
phone. In my case,if i try Meridian Player with the same tracks i don´t get
the
stuttering.
Thank you very much for your player¡¡¡¡

UPDATE: Install Cyanogenmod 5.0.6.2, andless still skips, sometimes worse than
with
droidmod. Installed SetCPU and set the system to "Performance" and it seems to
help
a little. In my last post, I said that "unlocking the phone causes
stuttering", I
meant when the lock screen is up and I swipe my finger across the screen the
music
stutters...

I'm on a rooted droid (bugless beast) 2.1, and I get the same stuttering as
above. I
think it's less about absolute processor speed than latency, because I can
overclock
to 1.0 GHz and that makes no difference in the stuttering.

Any action at all causes the stutter, from unlocking, to sliding home screens,
to
opening another app.

I did some test and at least, the native library is not in cause, because the
version
of Meridian Player which use this library do not suffer about lag. It could be
a design
issue in the application or more probably the service itself... And proc speed
do not
change anything about that. I noticed that event on a 1.5 rom, there is some
lag on my
hero when I try to unlock the screen or do something else.

So this is not a special 2.1 issue, I think it's general and 2.1 has just
increase its
effects...

I installed Cyanogenmod 5.0.7.0, and it has native FLAC support in the media
player.
No skipping. All of my files "just work" in the native media player. Please
continue working on andless, and make me want to come back and try it again in
the
near future...

Same problem (HTC Incredible with stock rom), perhaps it has to do with buffers
that
are too small or are not being updated fast enough?

Tried changing the server thread's priority from Process.THREAD_PRIORITY_AUDIO
to
Process.THREAD_PRIORITY_URGENT_AUDIO with no effect whatsoever...

Update: arbitrarily increasing the buffer size by 8192 bytes
(andless/jni/main.c:42) by
simply adding the line "config.buffer_size+=8192;" before the malloc didn't
help the
situation.. still some stuttering... perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place?

It seems the current Meridian Media Player Pioneer 0.18.2 works without
stuttering. At least on my HTC Hero with villainROM 6.1. andless is stuttering.
Wonder what they have modified to fix it.

Just updated Meridian to 0.19.0 and the stuttering problem is reduced, but
still there. I'm running an HTC Incredible with a stock rom. I'll have to ask
him to see what he did.
