@haileybrink Here is a working checklist of data integrity issues to look for:

• [x] - States should be listed with abbreviations not full names. i.e. CA not California. Is an issue in at least parts of 85, 81, 77.
• [x] - City names in 75 need to be checked for /s i.e. Lithia/Tampa. Check guide for more specific location. If not listed in guide use this geocoding tool
• [x] entries listed as statewide need to have blank cities instead.
• [x] Washington DC entries should be listed as Washington in city rather than Washington, D.C.. because dc is in the state column for geocoding purposes.
• [x] Some cities need to be more specific. Look through to find any with a / splitting metro areas. Check guides and if no more specific location is listed, use geocoding tool linked above.
• [x] verify locations with blank cities to ensure they are statewide
• [x] states should have abbreviations not full names i.e. CA rather than California
• [x] Filter and check that locations without addresses are marked unclear. PO Boxes too.
• [x] The Gaia's Guide publication doesn't include Kansas as a state. There are entries from cities in Kansas, such as Lawrenceville, Topeka, and Wichita, but they are all listed under Iowa. (Task: correct these entries.)

Complete except for a question about spelling out Puerto Rico - should it be spelled out or PR?

Additionally, I have included this in an email I am going to send, but I found some issues/irregularities with the statewide categorization in the airtable for this doc:

• The listings at the start of the California section in the scanned issue have specific cities listed in their addresses - for this reason, they were categorized as San Fran and Mathews in the Airtable- rather than statewide. What should they be categorized as? Right now I have them as statewide (blank city)
• I found this same issue with Maine. In the scanned issue, there is a section at the start of Maine that is titled, “Statewide Publication and Organizations:” with the following entries listed. Each of these has a specific city listed in their address, but are listed as statewide. In the Airtable, they were categorized under the city in their address. I changed them to having no city (being statewide) - is this correct?
  • Maine Lesbian Feminists (address in Belfast)
  • Maine Gay Task Force (address in Portland)
  • The Main Forewoman’s Herald (address in Portland)
• I found the same issue with Mississippi. In the scanned issue, there is a section at the start of Mississippi that has no city assigned. It lists “Mississippi Prisoners’ Defense Committee.” Which is located in Jackson, MI. Because of this, the airtable has it as a Jackson entry and not statewide. I went in a changed the city to be blank - is this correct?
  • While correcting this, I also found that the Biloxi entry (Casa Blanca) is not listed as Biloxi but Jackson - I fixed this as well.
• I found the same issue with Texas. In the scanned issue, the first listing under Texas is “statewide” and called “The South Central Region of the US Gay Academic Union” its address is in Austin. In the Airtable it was listed in Austin. I changed it to be statewide by removing the city. Is this correct?
• This issue was also different in the placement of PO Boxes. In 1975, the airtable contained PO Boxes as the address - this made it easy to mark these as unclear. In the 1977 issue airtable, if there is an address, it is listed in the address column and then if it is a PO Box it is indicated in the description - any of these with addresses but that state PO Box in the description, I marked with an unclear address - is this correct?

  • Annelise, This is an interesting one. I lean toward making them statewide but I’m curious what you think. The first one is a law office. It looks to me like the law organization had a permanent office in SF but its listed statewide because it served the entire state. Is that your read and would you opt for statewide or the physical location?
  • Here’s what the entry looks like:
  • Lesbians In the Law (“LIL”), c/o Women’s Association, Golden Gate University, Law School, 536 Mission Street, San Francisco, Calif.

  • I think so, but lets follow the same precedent as the above question. Wait for Annelise to weigh in though to be sure about the method for these.

  • Yes it is, this is a casulaty of multiple hands on the data. The PO Box should really be in the address. But that’s ok, I don’t think it’s worth the time to clean that up. Yes, marking them as unclear is correct.

@haileybrink Ok so lets ignore the statewide entry issues for now. You can just leave what you've already done and bypass this issue for every year moving forward. We're going to do a more robust check of every statewide entry across all years and that will be covered in a different issue (#19 ). Thanks for identifying these - it raised great questions that we needed to think through an address.

Okay, finishing up this issue - I have changed all of Puerto Rico to PR - and kept everything with the statewide issue as I had done it before. All done with this one!
