Old IEs: Should we add chrome frame? (sniffing) #84

It targets less than IE7. Should we change that so we target IE 8 and below? If so, what should the message say?

Is Google Chrome Frame compatible with IE 8 and below (wondering if that message would make sense for > IE6 users)?

My vote: :+1: :+1: :+1: , but also do a generic "here's a list of great browsers and why we think they're great" page. I can do a VPC if browserstack doesn't test correctly.

Script to detect browser and version then deliver a prompt to upgrade as well as a link to Google's What Browser? page, Browser Happy, or another page that's useful. We could also build our own.

Should this library also have a mobile sniffer? If so, could this be used for the Syncronex sniffer

Summary:

_Note:_ I am going to research this for my own enjoyment this weekend, so I'll report back here with whatever I find and we can all pow-wow, sing kumbaya, and deploy a solution

The "chromeframe" technique just uses IE conditional comments to show/hide a div that contains all the HTML needed to display a nice little message to those users. I've always liked this idea because it avoids having to include any sort of sniffing (which most people frown upon these days). Also, the syncronex sniffer is just short term patch until we can apply our own responsive solution. :100:

I'm open to other ideas though.

However we end up implementing such a thing, it would be cool to figure out the style and the verbiage.

Might be nice to have some sort of re-usable class(es) that we can use for warning messages and such. I envision this being something like the style of an alert box found in the jQuery themeroller for the UI.

Probably the most important part of this will be the wording (and links). :+1:

Thinking about it further, the term "chrome frame" is a little misleading (have I been misleading myself?).

Chrome frame is something old IE users can install:

Google Chrome Frame is a free plug-in for Internet Explorer. Some advanced web apps use Google Chrome Frame to provide you with additional features and better performance.

Whereas, we don't need old IEs to install a patch, we want people to upgrade.

So, I personally like the technique of using conditional comments ... or, since we're already using IE-specific classes, which are applied to the head:

That way, if we use this technique, we don't have to include IE conditional comments in the of the doc:

... though, the advantage of wrapping an IE conditional comment around the message <div> is that most browsers will ignore that HTML like it's an HTML comment.

If just using a class/id to show/hide, that means it's more "visible" to browsers (just hidden by css).

Hmm, I can see why using the IE conditional comment in this case might be the better pick.

It returns a true or false if it's mobile or not.

Note: The above should be used as a last resort in favor of "feature detection". For the syncronex stuff, for example, sniffing is just going to work quickly.

Update: Looks like we can put browser sniffing on the back burner. I might add the above code to our core JS, but for right now, it's not required.

In the prompt to users, might also be worth mentioning this IE10 "bug" about new tab links.

Summary: 

<a href="foo.html" target="_blank">bar</a>

doesn't work at all!! if the user's open in new tab settings aren't correct

Just read that Google will soon no longer support Chrome Frame, so further proof that our proposed solution is the best method :+1:
