I need a case for a mobile computer project. It should have enough room from everything you need for developing software while being out in the field (off power grid). No dongles, no wall warts, nothing that needs an extra case or that you might forget at home or somewhere else.
As always, this is foremost an educational project that hopefully teaches me interesting stuff.
The case should enclose:
Single board computer
a nice keyboard
some sort of display (e ink)
solar panel
self-contained connectivity to wall power (110-240V) and car power (12V)
two Wifi and two 4G models (for transparent network/SIM switching)
GPS
software defined radio board (CCC badge)
3 power banks (up to 24 cells)
provide 5V or 12V (car plug) to other devices
removable, wifi connected and inductively charged still/video camera
RAID of 2 or 3 SSDs
high-quality audio input (XLR) and high quality audio ADC for field recording
filled the upper part of an original C64 case with "Monster Clay"
made the top-half of the mould for the top-part of the case. This took a lot of liquid silicone and the result is flawed, because I didn't fill up the hidden air flow frill openings with clay properly. So there is some excess silicone that will be hard to remove without cutting into the top "stripes" of the case.
the border is not wide enough, so the thing needs a wooden frame for the top part of the mould to res on. The top part must be strengthened with a wood or metal slat to keep it from bending and touching the lower part which would result in a big hole in the finished enclosure. I expect the top part to be too floppy to support itself.
in an attempt to save some silicone, I added foam chips (packaging material). That was a bad idea, they float! Additionally, they are responsible for some flaws at the borders. I cut out the flawed parts (including the "grill" mentioned above) and filled the wholes with fresh silicone. Unfortunately it did flow under the original silicone, so the resulting enclosure might be a bit thinner (0.2mm or so) in those areas. We'll see.
