Currently, we accept file.tex (among other extensions) and file. We don't accept file. which often ends up being the result of tab-completion, e.g. if file.tex, file.log.md, file.pdf and others are around.
Make sure to deal with this case, i.e. try to find a file by cutting off (a) trailing period(s).
