Tutorial tweaks #77

I added some tweaks to the tutorial and one of the examples based on my experience working through it. Where I was unsure how to implement or express a particular improvement I just added some notes as a TODO.

Thank you!! I've incorporated these changes on the naming-conventions-2 branch (where I've been making a bunch of changes, so wanted to avoid diverging further). Closing this PR because it will be included in that one when the time comes.

Please feel free to commit any further improvements to that branch.
