Erratic homing behaviour #143

When my delta homes it will stop one or more axes short of the endstop, then does its back off, and on the retest it starts for the endstops again but often (not always) stops short. In the end, some axes will be fully homed and some will not.

Has anyone else experienced this? I've used Repetier successfully for some time now, no idea what went wrong - it's the same issue in both the Master and Development branch.

I have microswitch endstops connected signal to ground across the NC terminals, using the internal pullups.

M119 gives correct status no matter what endstop(s) are triggered.

Should I try connecting the +5 to the endstop's NO terminal? Would I need a resistor?

Is there any way to get the endstops to echo when triggered?

This can happen if the endstops are triggered early by cross talk. Have you drilled your endstop cables? Are there any other cables near by like motor cable (should also be drilled).

You can add outputs in motion.cpp line 800

there you can add a short print copied from somewhere else to see if it early triggered endstop.

All I can say is that my delta homes all the way.

The commanded z move is PrintLine::moveRelativeDistanceInSteps(0,0,Printer::zMaxSteps*1.5,0,feedrate, true, true);

which is 150% of total height, so it should always be possible to reach the top.

Hmm... I'll add an echo in, and start twisting wires... Crosstalk seems likely, I have everything (motors, electronics, endstops) mounted on top to keep 'em clear of the heated bed, since it's running off of mains. I think the switch to 24v for the steppers precipitated the issue.

I see erratic endstop behavior on the Z axis only with repetier firmware 0.82 on a CNC router, not with marlin though, so software issue is likely.

Hi, I'm running a Rostock on Marlin with great success. Just for curiosity I downloaded the latest development-branch of repetier today. I adjusted all settings carefully and ran into the very same problem: Y+Z are stopping short of the endstop, after the homing retract was done. X is always hit and stays there. Not sure, was causes this issue. I'm running 160 steps/mm (200 steps / rev @32 microstepping).

Homing procedure for delta is quite complex lately. First it is not a good idea to stop at the endstops. You need to go down a bit with

Only this allows to move a bit at the top, e.g. for extruder selection.

It is to center the carriage, after the endstops are hit. It is important to have it at the center or the equations give wrong results.

As the last step the current extruder is selected. If it has an offset it will move the carriage. Without ENDSTOP_Z_BACK_ON_HOME this move will git one endstop and make coordinates invalid.

All these are changeable in eeprom settings. As you see it is hard to say which one causes the move away from endstop, but there is a reason for it.

Hi repetier,

thanks for your quick response. I just checked for ENDSTOP_Z_BACK_ON_HOME and it's set to 0, as I don't have dual extruder. DELTA_XYZ_ENDSTOP_OFFSET_STEPS are set to 0 as well, as the height of my endstop-screws already take care of the centering. So after all, the carriage should hit the endstops, do a slower retry (set to 5mm) and then stop, as soon, as all endstops are hit. All other options are either set to 0 or adjusted accordingly to my marlin configuration. It would make sense, if all axis moved a bit down after homing, but it's just Y and Z. I've attached my configuration.h, maybe that helps.

There are many different thermistors, which can be combined with different resistors. This result in unpredictable number of tables. As a resolution, the user can define one table here, that can be used as type 5 for thermister type in extruder/heated bed definition. Make sure, the number of entries matches the value in NUM_TEMPS_USERTHERMISTOR0. If you span definition over multiple lines, make sure to end each line, except the last, with a backslash. If you have a sprinter temperature table, you have to multiply the first value with 4 and the second with 8. This firmware works with increased precision, so the value reads go from 0 to 4095 and the temperature is temperature*8.

Here is the solution:

As I told it selects extruder 0 with its offset. These are not 0 so you have that move. These are now stored in eeprom I guess.

Hi repetier, thanks for the quick reply. You're perfectly right, setting EXT0 OFFSET to 0 did the trick. The printer is currently printing and so far, movements are smoother. I think I'll stick to your firmware. As far as I can see, there was another user, having the very same issue lately. Maybe you should change the default configuration file to match the most common configuration (one extruder only), as this feature is likely to be ignored by accident when adapting settings from other firmwares/versions.
