Otherwise you could invite the RSE to give a short presentation on an aspect of software engineering that you then discuss in the group; mentor group members on software skills; or help out in particular code cleanup tasks.

Are semi-colons necessary if the list contains no commas?

Maybe add a comment in the introductory paragraph that RSEs are trained to communicate software best practice to researchers, so can help you without judging your terrible coding skills or using jargon.
