Would just "Networking" also cover it?
That sounds to me like standing around and talking to people :-). "Networks" would cover social science research into social media and a subset of graph theory and parts of computational science at least, so that's too broad. So I'd like "Computer" in there.

Maybe on its own, but not as part of a the list it will be in: https://github.com/research-software-directory/research-software-directory/blob/1837c040b4e1fb219c38213ab4bb135001c09c6f/backend/schemas/software.json#L549-L560
Well heck, if you want to put in just "Networking" then I'm not stopping you. You asked for an opinion and I gave one, including a joke and a serious argument. It's your software, so make from it what you want.
OK, will do. Know that I appreciate your opinion, even if I don't always agree with it
I have a project in which we're trying to figure out how to use software defined networks to support distributed data processing. The latter fits in Optimised Data Handling, but I'd like to be able to express the former as well.
"Computer Networking" is the broadest description I can think of. It could overlap to some extent with HPC (think lightpaths), but then both can be added I guess, it's usually more of an intersection than a union anyway.
