I've written this proposal based on my experience with setting up testing for around a half dozen software projects, all of which fall somewhere in or around the geophysical field of research. As a result, the assumed background and testing challenges are based on only a small subset of the wider research software world.
Input from people with experience in other areas would be particularly valuable here. For example -- would a molecular chemistry software project have different testing requirements to those I've outlined? Would the standard researcher technical background be different?
