build error on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.7 #8

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. svn chekcout code 
2. vi MAKE file change BITS?=32 to BITS?=64
3. make all

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

One fix for this issue is to update the gcc version. ex: module load gcc/4.9.1
