I think this would be worth trying. IMHO, it could work like:

show three options: Style: [both, outline, fill] with “both” the default
when you select a style, it changes the layout
it saves your selection as a cookie for future defaulting

Having a mockup by a designer would help. Probably a simple filter near the search or in the top-right corner or something. If we can make simple icons that mean "both", "fill", and "outline", that might be nice too.
