The fact that you had to go through such a cumbersome process is really weird to me. Even Oculus Quest connected via Oculus Link is able to create screenshots in Steam using Menu+Left Trigger method (already cropped, made from the left eye usually), no need for F12. And Vive is supposed to work better, since it works only through SteamVR, whereas Oculus Quest has to work through Oculus SDK to get to SteamVR.

This guide suggests that it should work the same for Vive, not sure why in your case it was creating screenshots only in Vive's software folder.

You could also use OpenVR Advanced Settings to bind holding some button to F12, but that would make a screenshot of the Alyx's Observer window, complete with UI (if enabled), not a screenshot from the eye

It is weird, sure, but like I explained - that's the only way I've managed to take screenshots in my setup. So for me it was either no screenshots at all or this cumbersome process.
