Display citation key in library view #2088

Open hugh-allan opened 2 years ago

hugh-allan commented 2 years ago

Since updating Zotero and BBT, I no longer have a column with citation keys when looking at my library. I used to have this ever since starting to use Zotero a couple of years ago, and have got used to identifying entries and searching etc based on citation keys, but now I can only see cite keys when an item is selected.

In the screenshot below, cite keys used to be in a column where the red circle is.

zotero

Is there a simple checkbox I'm missing like "show cite keys in library view" or something?

It looks like you did not upload an support log. The support log is important; it gives @retorquere your current BBT settings and a copy of the problematic reference as a test case so he can best replicate your problem. Without it, @retorquere is effectively blind. Support logs are useful for both analysis and for enhancement requests; in the case of export enhancements, @retorquere needs the copy of the references you have in mind.

If you did try to submit a support log, but the ID looked like D<number>, that is a Zotero debug report, which @retorquere cannot access. Please re-submit a BBT debug log by one of the methods below. BBT support log IDs end in -apse or -euc. Support logs that include sample references will end in -refs-apse or -refs-euc; these are the type @retorquere needs for diagnos.

This request is much more likely than not to apply to you, too, even if you think it unlikely, and even if it does not, there's no harm in sending a debug log that turns out to be unnecessary. @retorquere will usually just end up saying "please send a debug log first". Let's just skip over the unnecesary delay this entails. Sending a debug log is very easy, depending on your situation, follow one of these procedures:

  1. If your issue relates to how BBT behaves around a specific reference(s), such as citekey generation or export, select at least one of the problematic reference(s), right-click it, and submit an BBT support log from that popup menu. If the problem is with export, please do include a sample of what you see exported, and what you expected to see exported for these references, either by pasting it in a comment here (if it is small) or attaching it as a .txt file (if it's large). These logs will have an ID that ends in -refs-apse or -refs-euc.

  2. If the issue does not relate to references and is of a more general nature, generate an support log by restarting Zotero with debugging enabled (Help -> Debug Output Logging -> Restart with logging enabled), reproducing your problem, and selecting Send Better BibTeX debug report... from the help menu.

Once done, you will see a support log ID in red. Please post that support log id in an issue comment here.

Thank you!

Support log ID WHW7LGJI-apse

I have the same issue.

hnguyen19 commented 2 years ago

I have the same issue: Citation Key is missing on a PC. Citation Key is available as the first item in the Info/Note/Tags/Relation panel on a Mac. Zotero Debug doesn't recognize any error. ID: 1693328115

retorquere commented 2 years ago

If you right-click the column names bar, can you re-enable the citekey column? Zotero seems to have changed the behavior around column display.

maikol-solis commented 2 years ago

Not for me at least. I have only this menu if I right-click the columns names bar,

hugh-allan commented 2 years ago

Thanks heaps @retorquere, that's exactly the simple checkbox I was looking for! Right click the "Title" pane and the menu appears.

zotero-2
retorquere commented 2 years ago

@maikol-solis that means you must have a different problem. Can you restart with debugging enabled from the help menu, and then send a new support log?

@hnguyen19 I can't access logs behind that kind of ID, please see https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-better-bibtex/issues/2088#issuecomment-1081305025

maikol-solis commented 2 years ago

This is weird. I restarted Zotero again, and now I have the Citation key column available

Just in case this is, my support ID 9VQF3UM5-refs-euc

Thanks for the help.

I also have this issue; I just noticed that BBT is disabled in the addons menu with "Better BibTex for Zotero is incompatible with Zotero 5.0.96.3". I guess I need to downgrade BBT? Upgrading Zotero is not really an option for me currently.

retorquere commented 2 years ago

I'm afraid so, yes. I'm surprised that zotero let you upgrade to this version; I don't readily know what the last version was that supported the 5 line, and I can't easily downgrade zotero, but if you have a version that works I can make it so it doesn't update.

sersorrel commented 2 years ago

de842d7014b532a3bb75e3860ed6969ba2c763a0 is titled "Z6 update" and changes the supported Zotero version from 5.0.85 to 6.0, and that's in all releases since BBT 6.3, so I suspect BBT 6.2.14 is the last version that will work on Zotero 5 (it seems to work fine for me).

retorquere commented 2 years ago

https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-better-bibtex/releases/download/builds/zotero-better-bibtex-6.2.14.xpi will be up for about a week. This version will not update, so if at some point you do upgrade Zotero, you will need to manually install a newer BBT.

hnguyen19 commented 2 years ago

The screenshot shows what I have on Mac. I will report the PC situation as soon as possible.

Emiliano, you might not see anything from my error message because Zotero doesn't see it as an error. It says "no error" after I debugged but still let me submit an error. I had thought the error message would include system details. Sorry about that.

@hnguyen19 I don't expect there to be a difference between mac and PC. If you want me to help you, please restart with debugging enabled, and create a log as per https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-better-bibtex/issues/2088#issuecomment-1081305025, point 2. Please read those instructions carefully. Log IDs that look like D<number> are structurally useless to me as they are sent to the Zotero crew, of which I am not a part.

:robot: this is your friendly neighborhood build bot announcing test build 6.7.214.2088.6619 ("much prettier")

This update may name other issues, but the build just dropped here is for you; it just means problems already fixed in other issues have been folded into the work we are doing here. Install in Zotero by downloading test build 6.7.214.2088.6619, opening the Zotero "Tools" menu, selecting "Add-ons", open the gear menu in the top right, and select "Install Add-on From File...".
