If the problem still occurs I need a debug log produced by right-clicking the item and sending a debug log from the popup menu. The resulting ID will have -refs-
in it.
I am unfortunately not able to send the debug log. The continue button is greyed out. I have attached screenshots of the citation key with the red X as well as the debug log.
I just added a pdf to this citation and it was named correctly from the citation key (the filename is Hess-2020), but the citation key field is now empty and in the sidebar, there is a red X.
Can you click "save a copy for inspection" and attach it here?
There is no dialog box that comes up when I click on "save a copy for inspection". When I click on it, nothing happens.
Can you restart with debugging enabled (see help menu), and after Zotero restarts, send a log to fio (also in help menu), and then a regular BBT log?
without further feedback I will have to close the issue.

What happened?
Issue: I have had several issues with updating citation keys and renaming PDFs. When I update a PDF to match parent metadata, I have noticed that in the citation key field, there is nothing or a red X. When I refresh BibTex field using the Better bibtex plugin, I notice that the citation key is listed in the citation (alongside Title, Creator, Year, etc), but it is blank in the side bar section under where there is a magenta key icon (this is where the red X was).
Specific case: I noticed that one citation in particular did not have a year in the citation, so I manually updated the year so that the citation key and PDF title would be appropriate (before Smith- ; after: Smith-2022). When I updated the citation key, it came up blank and when I renamed my file, it changed the Attachment title to Smith- and the filename to .pdf. After refreshing the citation key, I was able to get the filename to change to Smith-2022, but the attachment title was still Smith- and the field for citation key in the side panel was still blank.
When I restarted Zotero, the citation key was updated and correct, the PDF file name was Smith-2022, but the attachment title was still Smith-
(I believe that this has to do with what is written under "Attachment Title vs. Filename" on the wiki page: https://www.zotero.org/support/file_renaming#customizing_the_filename_format)
