Single-letter input fails

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Book and Volume or Textfire Golf.  It'll come up with a menu that 
responds to single keystrokes.
2. Try to press one of the keys -- it'll just display it, but not respond.  The 
Back and Menu buttons don't seem to work.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
HunkyMod 0.3 on Gingerbread on a Nexus One

Please provide any additional information below.
(I'm pretty sure there's at least one other game that has this problem, but I 
can't think of it off the top of my head.)

Also affected are the ScottFree inform conversions of Scott Adams:
Voodoo Castle, The Count, etc.  The first menu can only be passed using a 
hardware keyboard.

The menus in Beyond Zork are also affected by this a bit -- the main menu isn't 
a problem, since you can enter full words, too, but some of the character setup 
ones are a bit buggy.
