Groups are optional in Gitlab and impact the project address:

No group: server/user_name/project_name.git (ex: https://framagit.org/Korko/SecretSanta.fr.git)
Simple group: server/group_name/project_name.git (ex: https://framagit.org/framasoft/framanews_home_page.git)
Group with subgroup: server/group_name/sub_group_name/project_name.git (ex: https://framagit.org/bib/ateliers/python.git)

Any way to make sure it is also compatible with gitlab.com server?
