Project data #23

Closed rhcaeb closed 4 years ago

rhcaeb commented 4 years ago

@belinskyc

~/_project directory includes 'lakeWinnipeg.xlsx' file to be used in final project.

The data is provided by the Manitoba Department of Sustainable Development;

Further information can be viewed here:

https://www.gov.mb.ca/sd/fish_and_wildlife/fish/commercial_fishing/netting_data.html

(Lake Winnipeg Index Gillnetting 2009-2018)

Primary focus will be analyzing walleye data as supplemental information was collected; e.g., aging structures and sex

belinskyc commented 4 years ago

Are you planning to use both sheets in the xlsx file? Do you plan on using the summary of count in the first sheet?

Just the 'index' netting tab. No, I will only be focusing on the individual fish (walleye) data; e.g., length, maturity, sex, and age. Each walleye is a record although other species were tallied in particular years/net sets

rhcaeb commented 4 years ago

..It is definitely not the cleanest database....but that will get resolved in the first few lines of code !

belinskyc commented 4 years ago

Agreed. This is more of an intellectual exercise for me. I am thinking about what is the best way to extract the data from a xlsx file that you are actually going to use without modifying the xlsx file.

So, I might play around with this a bit… for fun

Out of curiosity (for future work flow), did this issue pop up when I opened it? Or did it notify you because I tagged you?

I am guessing because you notified me ... but I am not sure… I am still figuring out GitHub

For some of the skills listed in the project rubric, i.e., plotting; are you opposed to ggplot() being used in the script or would you prefer to see plot() as that was what was taught in the course?

belinskyc commented 4 years ago

Hey Ryan,

Can you give an example here? ggplot() is used to create the plot information whereas plot() is used to send the plot information to the viewer. But, this is only true if you are using Source to execute your script, which is the way I teach in this class. So, my initial, and very hesitant, answer is that you need both. But, I don't believe I have captured what you are asking yet.

E.g., if I wanted to plot length/weight of walleye from the lakeWinnipeg.xlsx file, is there any preference to using;

plot(Weight~Length, data = '') vs

ggplot(data = '', aes(y = Weight, x = Length) + geom_point() + ylab()+ xlab() + etc.

belinskyc commented 4 years ago

Ah… I was answering the wrong question!

The class is a ggplot class, so you do need to use ggplot() – at least for the plots you are using in the skill list.

I was quite vague in my description therefore I apologies; The reason I asked was because I don't think we explored ggplot() in the programming fundamentals course, but I have explored ggplot() outside of the course, therefore I wanted to try and employ that skill, but I wasn't sure since we didn't explore it during the class.

belinskyc commented 4 years ago

No, actually I am confused right now and forgetting you are in the R course, not the GGPlot course! I will blame this on the fact it is Monday.

I do not mind you using GGPlot instead of R Base for the project – so, use either.
