I think I am good with that suggestion. Perhaps, further, we could offer a Weapons Specialist bonus, such that if you learn to IIQ 5 in five out of the six weapon classes of unusual weapons, you get an extra damage bonus. Many of them are low damage, so that would be a way to incentivize them at the higher levels.
I like that idea!
I would suggest making it a stacking bonus based on how many you know instead of such a high number required, and maybe start it at IIQ 4 (since that's when sword, axe, pole, and drawn bows start giving special bonuses). Maybe at IIQ 4 Unusual Weapon you gain +1 damage with that type for every other Unusual Weapon category you have at IIQ 3 or higher. At IIQ 5 that bonus goes up to +2.
Currently each class of unusual weapons is considered distinct in the same way that sword and axes are distinct. This makes it virtually impossible to learn a wide variety of unusual weapons - and since each unusual weapon has a rather narrow purpose, that's a bigger impact than with axes and swords.
We could permit a second class of unusual weapon to be added at the same IIQ level as the first for a single IIQ point, enabling the specialist in unusual weapons to achieve proficiency at less than extreme old age.
