Option 1:

• Gradually remove letters from a word up to 3? letters. There would have to be a lot of corner cases. (Easy but probs ineffective)
• Compare based on simplest common word. eg. child->children child->childs. Both fall under the same branch. (May have really high worst-case complexity but very effective.)
