ok, after looking at this, I think that list is way too extensive and probably it would merit its own publication at the source (= IUCN)!
in any case I have time nor ambition to manually add that to the checklist.
I understand you perfectly. Let's do this in a pragmatic way and progress way. Let's start with languages we need. If #9 is solved, we have all common names on GBIF very easily as I have already done the mapping of DwC vernacular names profile.
I will add german, useful from a belgium-and-neighbouring-countries-perspective
French and dutch names we have now are the 'agreed' ones at belgian level, i would not add any others
I have suggested to IUCN to compile their list of vernacular names and trade names and to publish that on zenodo, so we can perhaps harvest that later. I will add German names based on this website.
Common names in other languages could be added on demand in our raw tsv file. The publication of all names via zenodo by Eruope doesn't seem to me the best solution. The common names should be maintained on their catalogue together with all the rest of information (taxon core, distribution, pathways, ...) and so we will be able to fetch all the info via API, see #6. Putting the names on zenodo will spread the information on multiple data sources, creating confusion.
well, of course I agree and we can suggest to EASIN to do this, but it is work by IUCN so EC will eventually have to ask EASIN to do it - I can take it up in the technical and scientific advisory board. But so eventually this is not up to us.
Spin off from #13. @timadriaens will add the names to the raw file, while @damianooldoni will map it to DwC.
