A record for a Collection (parent record) is used when the item contains multiple pieces. Each piece in the collection is entered as an Item in a collection (child record) and linked to the collection record.
A record for a Single item is used when the item consists of one piece and is not part of a collection.
A record for a Composite volume is used for consists of items that were created separately and later bound together, typically by an owner or institution. Examples include volumes consisting of printed items that were issued separately and bound together, or volumes in which printed items and manuscripts are bound together.
