In some MARC fields, including 550, $9 can have various functions, indicated by a following single letter. See here: https://www.alma-dach.org/alma-marc/authority/550/

Wait, what standard are you using? We follow LOC MARC21, and AFAIK we cannot have functions added to subfields, as each subfield is exactly one char: https://www.loc.gov/marc/authority/ad5xx.html

So I guess the right solution would be to label the subfield $9 and to specify the function in the text field. GND’s own data seems to work that way: $9v I wrote Sarah Hartmann today and asked for her advice, but she hasn’t responded yet.

This would also affect other fields (500, 548 i.e.), but I’ll send you updates for those seperately.
