Outbound audio discontinuous #54

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Call my LAN asterisk server's echo test (*43)
2. Talk and/or listen to return audio
3. Hear return audio come through in ~0.75 sec bursts with equal silent
pauses between

What is the expected output?
Continuous audio.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Siphone beta 7 on iphone 3G 2.1 over wifi

Please provide any additional information below.

I can quit out of Siphon, run Truphone and perform the same test - perfect
audio there. Siphon is negotiating a ulaw channel with my asterisk server.

Inbound audio, e.g. the echo test canned introduction, sounds fine albeit
too loud and distorted (another issue). This points to upstream audio
being the problem.

I tried rebooting the iphone and it still does the same thing.

More on this: it appears to have to do with echo cancellation and maybe the
overvolume problem reported as another issue. If the iphone receive audio is
turned
up, the 0.75 sec cycle occurs during the echo test. If I turn it down, the
received
audio is continuous but I still hear quite a bit of short echo and when
speaking a
loud word the received audio will cut out again for a short time.

It could be solving the other issue will take care of this one too.

To explain a little further, the cycling appears to have been from the
background
noise being loud enough to cause the AEC to mute the receive audio, unmute it
after a
time, and so forth.

When turning down the volume a little, I'm able to make the receive audio mute
altogether for around 0.4-0.7 sec just by talking loudly.

With beta 8 the audio is good now, but the echo canceller still seems to be too
aggressive. This shows by cutting portions of syllables out of words. By the
lack
of background noise I can hear it gating the audio on and off. The issue is
less
pronounced than when the audio was clipping with beta 7 but is still there.

This is both using the Asterisk echo service and calling another SIP phone on
my LAN
(regular phone connected to a Linksys ATA). The AEC behavior seems the same.

This seems to be fixed in beta 9. With the Asterisk echo service I get a
little bit
of echo but the audio is now continuous.

Calling another SIP phone on the network, sounds great.
