Full range of font weights (thin to black) is not available in Western font, although it is in CJK versions #88

Noto Sans Japanese, for example, is available in seven weights: Black, Bold,
Medium, Regular, DemiLight, Light and Thin. This includes the Western / Latin
characters. However, the basic Noto Sans is only available in Regular and Bold.

It seems to me that the work is already done, and these extra weights could be
made available by packaging the Western sets from the CJK fonts.

The Western glyphs in Noto Sans CJK are based on Source Sans Pro, not Noto
Sans, so re-packaging those glyphs as separate Noto Sans font resources is a
non-starter. There is some history behind the development of Noto Sans CJK that
resulted in a total of seven weights, but that is out of scope of this
discussion.

As Ken says, the LGC that is in Noto CJK is not directly related to the Noto
LGC fonts. This is outside the scope of the current project.
