Overhaul #9

deleted some unused code
switched to GitHub Action and make CI pipeline work again (test should pass now)
updated README (there were some outdated comments about release-candidates not being part of the s3 bucket)
removed desktop entry creation on Linux

Fixes #8

@rkyleg Maybe you can have a look at this? I think it would be really nice to have the CI checks pass on the asdf-vm plugin list so that people dare to use this.
