I am currently (for fun) bringing up a bare metal tailsk8s Kubernetes cluster composed of old laptops and desktops I have lying around and right now I have everything peachy except for the CNI component. This is the last thing to push me over the finish line.

Awesome glad to hear it! There are a ton of improvements that can be made and I've only tested it for small periods of time so no guarantees that it will hold up over the lifetime of a cluster :)
