'Indices' is quite mathematical and not the way normal people would refer to numbering.

It is a necessary term. We understand that it may sound mathematical, but we think that the alternative, "numbering" is very awkward. Indices sounds more professional. It is also more common to use "indices" as compared to "indexes", according to Google Ngram.
